Idaho Department of Fish and Game Sturgeon Study
November 2012- I volunteered with the white sturgeon hook survey project conducted by Idaho Department of Fish and Game. For this study I assisted with a hook and line sample method that was implemented to see the amount of metal within sturgeon in the Snake River. Once a sturgeon was captured a total length and a fork length, where the hook was set, and number of hook scars around the mouth were recorded. After this was done each sturgeon was scanned for a pit tag before a metal detector was rubbed on the outside of their gut. The location was recorded where the metal detector went off. This study is being conducted to determine the amount of hooks that are being ingested by sturgeon and also to model the population dynamics of Snake River white sturgeon.
Service Learning Projects
October 2012- For my limnology class I sampled a pond for a landowner who wanted to restock their pond with fish after a large winter kill had occurred. Through this project I learned how to apply what I learned in a classroom setting to a real world application. For this project I worked in a group that looked at chlorophyll a, total phosphorous, light irradiance, and made a bathymetric map. With this project I was able to improve my ability to use sampling gear and I was also able to learn new skills.
Kids Fishing Derby
June 2011- I assisted with the kids fishing derby that was sponsored by the Associated Student Body at Wenatchee Valley Community College. During this event I cleaned fish that were caught by kids, so the could later enjoy their prized catch of the day for dinner. I also helped kids catch and land countless fish that day. This event helped me realize how many kids do not get to participate in fishing unless it is at an event like this. It was beneficial for me to see the enjoyment these kids had fighting these fish because it made me realize the impact I can have in a future career maintaining populations of fish for future generations to enjoy.
